Contemporary culture has made the voyage a kind of apprenticeship, and travel is a powerful creative stimulus for designers. The Traveling Seminars created by VillaTosca are multidisciplinary experiences that enrich and widen the participants' cultural horizons through a total immersion in selected places and cultures. Designing a project signifies trying to establish a constant awareness of the desired esthetic and functional qualities of the product in relation to the environment, the history, and the material and cultural roots of the product. The aim is restoring its deepest meaning in the course of the creative and conceptual process. The cultural and environmental frame of the Traveling Seminars leads the designer to confront subjects apparently far from daily life. It creates an 'estrangement', a deviation that involves perception and perspective, geography and culture, that enables the birth of ideas that are transformed into innovative forms and objects. In the scientific world, it is well known that serendipity, or accidental luck, at times allows the researcher to grasp new knowledge in an intuitive and immediate way. A voyage bears within itself the concrete possibility of illumination which one can reach through lateral thoughts, sensory stimulation and spiritual experiences accomplished within the landscape and the culture.
